VOLATILE!
Exhibition Curated by Debra Riley Parr
Presented at the Poetry Foundation, 61 W Superior St, Chicago, IL 60654
Dec 11, 2015 through January 19, 2016

VOLATILE! is an exhibition that joins poetry with olfactory experience. Scent has its own syntax, and VOLATILE! features durational and olfactory works that engage the permeable bounds of poetry. In Eduardo Kac's Aromapoetry, an artist-book written entirely in scent, Kac composes twelve aromapoems that range in their material structure and semantic resonance. Using some of the rarest scented oils available, perfumer David Seth Moltz's The Beast of the Sacred Horn is a serial installation of scented accords that convey the action of an original narrative. In Let's Call It Grass/A Poetry Olfaction, the artist Brian Goelzenleuchter and poet Anna van Suchtelen invite readers to sniff a scent over the course of an unfolding prose.  In addition to these durational works, the exhibition will feature wall-text by Ben Van Dyke, Seth Bogart's Perfumania!, a collection of ceramic perfume bottles, alongside Amy Radcliffe's Madeleine--a conceptual odor camera based on current perfumery technology and inspired by Proust's famously redolent pastry.
