Debra Riley Parr (Ph.D., Boston University) is Associate Professor of art + design history and theory at Columbia College Chicago. She is currently writing a book on the role of scent in contemporary art and design practices. She has presented conference papers on perfume and other odors in Denmark and Milan, and has conducted numerous workshops on olfactory experience at venues such as the Arts Club of Chicago and the Chicago History Museum. At The Poetry Foundation, Debra curated VOLATILE!, an exhibition focusing on the intersections of scent and poetry. Designing with Smell: Practices, Techniques and Challenges, a collection of essays edited by Victoria Henshaw, includes her research on technologies and scent. Olfactory Art and the Political in an Age of Resistance, a volume of essays co-edited with Gwenn-Aël Lynn, was published in 2021 by Routledge.
